When the producers were looking for technicians to work on the movie, several trade
publications including DAILY VARIETY refused to run the "help wanted" ads until the
word "fart" was removed from the ad copy. The ads were accepted only after the title
was changed to "Windbreakers".
Dozens of professional technicians (and actors) were eager to work on "Fart", but only
if their names were changed in the credits. The producer's telephone was swamped with
dozens of calls from WOMEN who absolutely LOVED the concept of the film, and offered
to work on it for free. (Although nobody actually worked for free).
The film had a 30-day shooting schedule, and cost $43,000 to complete. The producers
obtained shooting permits to shoot on the streets of Los Angeles, but the scenes in
Russell and Heather's house were shot secretly...without a permit...at a mansion in
upscale Toluca Lake, California.
A 30-minute, highly edited version of the movie, was distributed to novelty stores such
as Spencer's Gifts, and Funny Side Up. It was later re-cut into it's current 90-minute
runtime.
One of the panelists in the "Bong Show" segment of the film was played by an actor
named CONRAD BROOKS, who also appeared in several Ed Wood films. While
working on "FART", Conrad told it's producer (with a smile), "now I've had the privilege
of working on the two worst films of all time..."Plan 9 From Outer Space", and "FART".
